Thanks to television, there’s a persistent myth about who actually hires a professional organizer: either a completely overwhelmed mess, or someone already so tidy that their idea of clutter would look perfectly fine to the rest of us. Neither is the full picture.
Plenty of people hiring organizers are genuinely skilled at organizing already, they’re just short on time. Others know exactly what they want to accomplish but need manpower and outside accountability to actually get it done. Others are simply in a season of life so chaotic that they don’t know where to even begin. All of these are valid, common reasons, and none of them mean something is fundamentally wrong.
There’s a particular frustration worth calling out directly: scrolling through beautifully staged organizing content online, feeling inspired, and then picking up a single item in your own space only to freeze completely, uncertain where it even belongs. Setting it down and picking up the next item brings the exact same stuck feeling all over again. That loop, wanting to get organized, seeing it done beautifully elsewhere, and still feeling completely lost in your own space, is incredibly common, and it has nothing to do with intelligence or effort.
Whether formally diagnosed with ADHD, suspecting it without ever pursuing a diagnosis, or simply unsure what that would even mean, the common thread is real: chronic overwhelm, decision fatigue that makes even small choices feel enormous, and the disorienting experience of setting out to do one task and somehow ending up doing something else entirely in a different room. None of that reflects laziness or a lack of intelligence. It reflects a brain that needs a genuinely different approach than most standard organizing advice offers.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
