Here’s a story worth telling as the holiday season ramps up and hosting friends or family starts feeling like a real possibility again.
An invitation gets extended, a date lands on the calendar, and true to form, nothing happens until the deadline gets close enough to trigger genuine urgency. Then comes the frantic cleaning phase, focused entirely on the spaces guests will actually see, which inevitably makes every other room worse as things get shoved out of sight. Next comes delegation, handing kids and a spouse random tasks with zero explanation, which is a perfectly fine skill for them to build, not something to feel guilty about. Eventually there’s a final scramble to look presentable yourself, and a store run for one easy thing to set out, chips, salsa, whatever requires no real prep.
Then the doorbell rings, and the meal isn’t actually ready. Here’s the part worth remembering: that’s not a crisis. Inviting guests over early enough that no one’s starving, giving them a drink, and then simply asking if they’d like to help chop something for the salad turns out to be one of the most relaxed, connected parts of the whole evening. Hands stay busy, conversation flows more naturally, and there’s no performance pressure on either side. Guests who know and love you already expect a little scatteredness, and being invited to help usually makes them feel more at ease, not less.
The real lesson underneath all of this: it was never about how the house looked, what was on the table, or how put-together the host appeared. It was about being genuinely present with people worth spending time with. The homes that look effortlessly perfect when visiting someone else often come with an unspoken tension, hosts unable to fully relax because everything has to stay flawless. Guests, more often than not, aren’t cataloguing imperfections nearly as critically as it feels like they are. If anything, what they notice and quietly envy is a host who’s relaxed enough to let things be good enough.
Issue an invitation this season, even a small one. If the idea of preparing a full meal feels like too much, ask the guest to bring part of it, or plan for a simple appetizer and order something in once they arrive, leaving plenty of room to just enjoy each other’s company while everything else comes together around you.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
