A great question came in from the community: what do you do with clothes worn once but not actually dirty? It feels wrong to fold them back with clean clothes, but they don’t belong in the hamper either. What handles that in-between zone?
The first and simplest option is an over-the-door hook, on a closet door, a bathroom door, or affixed to a wall with a strong command strip. Hooks work well because they require almost no effort, and effort is exactly what’s missing when we’re dealing with something that isn’t fully clean or fully dirty. Left without an easy option, worn clothes tend to get stuffed in a drawer or tossed on the floor, get wrinkled, and eventually get thrown in the wash anyway simply because they’re too rumpled to feel confident rewearing, the clothing equivalent of forgotten restaurant leftovers shoved to the back of the fridge.
Notice where clothes naturally tend to pile, the floor, a chair, and place a decorative basket or box directly there instead of fighting the habit. If you’re already going to drop clothes in that spot, let the container be nicer than a hamper so it’s visually distinct, and stop trying to force yourself into a different behavior that isn’t sticking.
In my own closet, both my husband and I have a designated “worn once” drawer, no other purpose, just a drop zone for clothes that are neither clean enough to hang back up nor dirty enough for the hamper. If you have an empty drawer available, even the bottom drawer of a dresser, this works beautifully. You could also designate a chair inside a closet as a similar drop zone, since it’s out of sight but still clearly signals “not dirty, don’t wash yet.” This single habit has been one of the biggest reasons our closet has stayed manageable for years.
Pick one option, a hook, a basket, or a dedicated drawer, and place it exactly where your worn-but-not-dirty clothes already tend to land. Try it for a week and see if it actually reduces the floor pile before deciding whether to adjust.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
