With Halloween approaching, our front doors, so often neglected in favor of whichever side door we actually use, are about to get real foot traffic. Instead of just tidying up once, let’s gamify it using the logic of hopscotch.
In the classic game, you toss a stone onto a numbered grid, hop your way to it on one or two feet depending on the square, pick it up, and hop back to the beginning. The brilliance is that every single turn starts over at square one, you’re always returning to the start before advancing further.
Grab a post-it note, orange fits the season, and use its color as a deliberate visual trigger for your brain. Stick it somewhere you’ll see it daily, like the inside of your front door. Step one: snap a picture of your front porch and decide what you want it to look like for trick-or-treaters, then actually do it. That might mean sweeping it off, wiping down a rocking chair, setting out a pumpkin, and turning the porch light on. Once that’s done, move your post-it to reflect the next area.
The next day, before advancing to a new area, walk back through your porch first. Did it hold up, or did a scooter end up across the steps overnight? Fix that quickly, that’s your immediate win, then move on to the next space, maybe your foyer, snapping a before and after picture so you know what “done” looks like. Each day, you retrace every previous step before adding a new one, porch, then foyer, then whatever’s visible beyond that, dining room, office, living room, whatever order motivates you most in the moment.
The complaint I hear constantly is “I worked and worked, and then I turn around and it looks like I did nothing.” Retracing your steps daily means each area only ever needs a tiny reset rather than a full redo, which keeps the whole thing feeling doable instead of endless.
This is just for Halloween. There’s no pressure to maintain this system forever, no need to think past October 31st. If you want to keep it going afterward, great, but it’s not required.
Grab a colored post-it note today, snap a photo of your front porch, tidy it to where you want it, and stick the note somewhere visible as your trigger. Tomorrow, retrace that same spot first before advancing to the next one, and keep hopscotching your way through the house one small area at a time.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
