Let’s talk about what to do when guests are on the way and time has suddenly become a crunch, whether that’s Thanksgiving happening right now or any future moment when people are en route and you’re down to the wire. Traditionally SOS means save our ship, but today we’re using it for a strategic organizing sprint.
Set a two-minute timer, grab paper and a pencil, and write down everything you’d hope to get done before guests arrive. Don’t filter or prioritize, just get it all down.
Once the timer stops, look at your list and circle only the three things that would genuinely make a guest feel welcome: beds, if anyone’s staying overnight, since changing sheets in front of a guest is the kind of moment that makes people feel like an afterthought, bathrooms, since everyone appreciates a clean one whether they’re staying over or just visiting for dinner, and food, making sure you actually have the ingredients on hand for whatever you’re serving. Keep kitchen cleanup as a bonus fourth category to tackle last.
Set a recurring 15-minute timer, and instead of stopping it when it goes off, reset it and keep going, using each ring as a checkpoint to ask whether you’re still on task. Divide your remaining time into thirds across your three priority categories, capping each at an hour even if guests are still several hours out. If time is truly short, quarter that down to 15 minutes per category instead. Strip the bed and start the wash before moving to the bathroom, then circle back to finish the bedroom while the wash runs. Kids can help by clearing entryways or straightening common areas while you focus on the priority zones.
Once beds and bathrooms feel solid, pause and assess what you actually need from the store, get it before stores close, and don’t worry about full unpacking, refrigerate what needs it and leave the rest for later. Once that’s handled, fill the sink with soapy water and start on dishes, if guests walk in mid-task, it just reads as being in the middle of prepping, not being behind.
Take a moment to get yourself ready too, check the mirror, feel a little more put-together, then come back for one final push if needed.
Fifteen minutes before arrival, take a breath and remind yourself this was never really about the house. It’s about being together. Resist the urge to apologize for anything as guests walk in, be present with them instead of narrating what didn’t get done. Tomorrow, when you inevitably think “I can’t believe I did this again,” give yourself grace, this is simply how your brain approaches these moments, and you got it done. The priority is always the people, not the stuff.
The next time guests are on the way and time is tight, brain dump for two minutes, circle your top three priorities, work in resettable 15-minute sprints, and save the kitchen and yourself for last. Then let go of the rest the moment they walk through the door.
Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving. Until next time, continue to choose joy.
