I had a small aha moment sitting in the stands at my son’s track meet last weekend. Track is a fascinating sport, you’re earning points for a team, but you’re also constantly racing against your own past self. You can lose a race outright and still walk away thrilled because you beat your own previous personal record.
My son runs the 100 and the 4×100, and in a meet there can be seven separate heats for the 100 alone, groups of runners sorted by their recorded times, slowest heat first, fastest heat last. Coming off an injury, his first race back seeded him based on his old personal record, before the injury, before the rehab. He landed in a heat far too fast for where he currently was. He was proud of his time given the circumstances, but he lost by a lot, and it was a little defeating.
By his second race, he was seeded based on his current, post-rehab time, and it made all the difference. He was pushed, but not left behind. Here’s the thing about personal records: they’re never set when you’re so far ahead of everyone in your heat that nothing pushes you, and they’re never set when you’re so far behind that some part of you quietly gives up before the race even ends. The personal best happens in that narrow, almost magical window where you feel both challenged and capable at the same time.
We live in an era where you can sit on the couch in loungewear, scrolling through home images that essentially represent the Olympic-record heat of what a house could look like. That’s not challenging, it’s just defeating. It doesn’t spark energy, it sparks the feeling that the distance between where you are and where that photo is, is simply too far to close. You’ve been placed in the wrong heat entirely, seeded with Olympians when you’re just getting back on your feet.
Your home isn’t a photo. It’s meant to be lived in, not styled for a snapshot. What we’re chasing here isn’t perfection, it’s happiness, and happiness comes from a home that feels less stressed and less chaotic than it currently is, not a home that matches an image built for the internet. The goal is finding your own version of that perfect heat, challenged enough to keep pushing, capable enough to actually believe you can get there.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
