What if I told you that a system isn’t what’s missing from your home, and finding the “right” one isn’t going to save you either? A system is not a savior. If you have an ADHD brain, I think your energy belongs in two completely different places instead.
The organizing industry loves to tell you that getting your home together is just a matter of putting the right system in place and then maintaining it forever. For fish brains, that’s a fallacy dressed up as fact. It’s advice built by and for monkey brains, the neurotypical, type-A minds that naturally operate in order and consistency. It works beautifully for them because it suits how their brains function. Ours don’t work that way, and no system is going to fix that mismatch.
The two things systems demand most, routine and consistency, are exactly what our brains resist. Routine feels like a bother because we’re wired to seek novelty and change, the opposite of repetition. And our all-or-nothing mindset means the first time life gets chaotic and we can’t follow the system perfectly, we abandon it entirely and conclude it just wasn’t the right system, when really it was never the right goal to begin with. If you’ve spent years convinced you just haven’t found your perfect system yet, I want to gently release you from that search.
Instead of chasing the perfect system, put your energy into having less stuff. There’s no magic threshold you’re aiming for, it’s simply a constant direction to keep moving in. Every time you’re debating keep it or get rid of it, lean toward letting it go. Less stuff to manage is genuinely the thing that makes a chaotic home feel more manageable, system or no system.
Even a completely organized home with everything assigned a spot will still get messy day to day, that’s just life. But when it’s time to pull it back together, maybe with guests arriving in an hour, knowing without hesitation where everything belongs is the actual difference between calm and constant frustration. That’s not a system working, that’s simply having the right amount of stuff and a clear home for each thing.
You’re not trying to arrive at some permanent, fixed state of organization. You’re still going to have chaotic days, stuff still ends up out of place, that’s normal. The real question becomes: what do I do when it’s chaotic and I need it back in order quickly? The answer isn’t a system, it’s decluttering and having homes for things already in place, so restoring order takes minutes instead of hours of decision fatigue.
Stop searching for the perfect organizing system. Instead, pick one small area today and ask two questions only: what can I remove entirely, and does everything remaining have an obvious home? Direction matters more than perfection here.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
