If you feel like you’re constantly decluttering, organizing, and cleaning your house, exhausted by the end of the day, with seemingly nothing to show for it, I want to pull you out of that spiral. The progress is probably happening, it’s just not showing up where you’re looking for it. Here are three steps to try.
Standard cleaning advice tells you to do laundry on Mondays, scrub bathrooms on Tuesdays, vacuum on Wednesdays. It keeps you constantly busy, but you never get the satisfaction of anything being fully done, you scrub every bathroom in the house, sit down exhausted, and still see a messy living room staring back at you. Instead, pick one room, ideally the one your family spends the most time in, and commit to working only on that space until it feels right. Yes, that means the bathrooms might slide for a bit. That’s okay, you’ll still scrub them when it truly matters or company’s coming. Start with decluttering, and don’t overthink it: if something doesn’t belong to the actual purpose of that room, move it out. Where it goes next is a separate problem for later. Once that space is genuinely decluttered, you’ll likely feel motivated to deep clean it properly, dust, vacuum, fluff the pillows, even enjoy the decorative finishing touches, because it finally feels clean enough to deserve them. That momentum then carries you into the next room, the same way Dave Ramsey’s debt snowball works: one small space, fully handled, builds the energy for the next one.
If you cleared your living room completely on day one, dog toys away, pillows fluffed, blankets folded, shoes returned to the garage, and you walk back in the next day to find the same categories of clutter creeping back, that’s not failure. It’s completely normal, and even if just one less item made it back this time, that’s real progress. Over repeated rounds, you’ll start noticing exactly what keeps reappearing in that space, and instead of fighting it, you can build a home for it that matches how your family actually lives: a basket by the door for shoes, a big basket for blankets instead of insisting on folded perfection every time. We’ve already made peace with the fact that dishes and laundry reset daily. Kids’ toys reappearing after being picked up deserves the same grace. Your house is a living space for the people you love, not a museum, and one day you won’t be picking up after them anymore. Starting back at square one each time isn’t defeat, it’s just how lived-in spaces work, and the pattern will keep shrinking a little more each round.
Pick one of these two tools, or use both. First, take a before and after photo every time you work a space. Our brains genuinely don’t reliably remember the progress we made, but a photo can’t lie, even if you have to play a “spot the five differences” game with yourself to see it. Second, keep a tackled list in your planner, a running record of what you actually accomplished, so your brain has proof instead of the vague feeling that you did nothing today while somehow also being exhausted. This is especially useful on days you get pulled away from your focused space entirely, driving a forgotten lunchbox to school or handling an urgent return still counts as real work, and it deserves to be written down too.
Pick one room today, declutter only what doesn’t belong there, and take a before and after photo. Tomorrow, walk back in, notice what crept back, and jot down what you tackled that day, even if it’s not in that room at all.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
