A couple episodes back, I talked about three reasons hiring a professional organizer won’t work for you if you have ADHD, a bit of a clickbait title, honestly, aimed at the doubts and embarrassment so many clients feel before they ever let someone into their space. I never planned it as a two-parter, but it deserves one. So today, as an actual professional organizer who works with ADHD clients constantly, here are three genuine reasons hiring one is a great idea.
So often, clients already know exactly what they wish their space could feel like, but they’ve lost track of the idea somewhere in the flood of options, or they have a rough sense of it but no idea how to start without getting tripped up halfway through. Having someone to think out loud with changes everything. Part of my initial consultation is asking questions clients haven’t thought to ask themselves: what do you want to use this space for when it’s working well? What feeling do you want it to give you? What keeps ending up in here that you wish wasn’t? An organizer who has done this across many different homes can help picture possibilities you simply haven’t had the repetition to imagine on your own. That clarity alone is worth a lot.
You’ve heard me talk about accountability constantly, and for good reason. Getting yourself onto someone else’s calendar creates a real deadline with real consequences in a way your own calendar rarely manages to. You may not treat your own time as fixed and important, but you’ll treat someone else’s calendar, someone you hired, someone whose time you don’t want to waste, very differently. That external accountability creates the energy to finally show up for the work you’ve been avoiding.
It’s genuinely impossible to hire an organizer, get them into your home, build a plan together, and have money and time already committed, without action actually happening. You can think about a transformation in your head for years and never take a single step. Having another person physically there, working alongside you toward an end point, means you actually see the progress happen in real time. And when things shift mid-project, when you realize you forgot about an item, or the plan you made isn’t quite working once you’re in it, having someone there to think it through with you keeps you moving instead of spiraling into the voices that say you were always going to fail at this anyway. A good organizer is there to encourage you, stay non-judgmental, and help you work around a stumbling block rather than get stuck on it.
All of that value depends on finding an organizer whose personality and approach actually fit you. That match matters as much to them as it does to you, so it’s worth being thoughtful about who you choose to work with.
If you want to make hiring an organizer go further, do the easier work yourself first. Join a low-cost community like my membership, watch organizers like Dana K. White or The Minimal Mom and work alongside their videos, and tackle the more clear-cut spaces on your own, a bathroom, a laundry room, a dresser. You’ll likely hit a point where everything falls apart, a craft room, a wall of sentimental items, a room some of my members lovingly call their “room of doom.” That’s exactly the moment to bring in a professional. You’ll get so much more value from hiring an organizer for the genuinely hard stuff once you’ve already flexed your own decluttering and organizing muscles on the easier spaces, and you can show them what’s worked for your brain so far so they can build on it instead of starting from zero.
Pick one clear-cut space to tackle on your own this week, and start a running list of the spaces that stump you. When that list starts to feel like a “room of doom,” that’s your sign it’s time to bring in help.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
