Day four of our 12 Days of Chaos series, still having fun with the 12 Days of Christmas song as a way to sub in five-minute house tasks that repeat, day over day, so the house has a fighting chance of keeping pace with holiday chaos.
Look around wherever you’re standing. If you see stuff piled onto something that could otherwise be a nice, peaceful, mostly empty surface, that’s your target. In my own kitchen, I count each small segment as its own counter: left of the sink, right of the sink, left of the stove, right of the stove. That way, “four clean surfaces” is genuinely reachable inside a single five-minute timer.
Start a sink of soapy water before the timer even begins. Then empty whatever belongs in the sink straight into it, put away a few stray items from each surface, and use whatever time’s left to actually wipe them down. You’ll feel the difference immediately. If your kitchen’s already in decent shape, redirect this same task to the living room, straightening and dusting a couple of cluttered end tables instead. Or aim it at a playroom table buried under everything except the toys it was meant for, or an entryway that’s technically working as a landing zone, just landing everything and forgetting it there.
If four feels like too much, set the timer and do one surface. That’s still real progress, and tomorrow’s repeat gives you a new surface to pick.
Four empty surfaces, three clean bathrooms, two fluffy pillows, and the “so that” to set priorities (that one’s from episode one of this series, worth going back to if you haven’t heard it).
Set a five-minute timer and clear one cluttered surface right now, whether that’s a counter segment, an end table, or an entryway landing zone. If you have time for more, keep going until you’ve hit four.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
