12 Days of Chaos, Day 8: The Mistakes Make the Memories
Day eight of our 12 Days of Chaos series, and I’ll be honest: even I’m behind. I’d planned to run this series December 1st through the 12th, and here we are on the 12th with four more days still to go. In the middle of running a series about staying on top of holiday chaos, I’ve fallen a bit behind on my own actual Christmas prep. That’s the season for you.
Don’t take it too seriously
If you’re feeling the pressure of everything left to do and the choices about what you’ll have to let go of this year, take a beat. Looking back at Christmases past, things always seem to work out fine. Nobody’s still holding onto some supposed disaster from years ago. What felt urgent in the moment usually fades, or better yet, turns into a funny story you tell later. The mistakes tend to be what actually make the memories. You’ve got this, and none of it needs to be taken quite so seriously.
Today’s task: 8 Dishes a-Washing
Here’s the running lineup so far, tweaked slightly for rhythm: eight dishes a-washing, seven things a-dusting, six floors a-sweeping, a five-minute tidy, four cleared surfaces, three scrubbed bathrooms, two fluffy pillows, and a “so” to set priorities.
Set a five-minute timer and just have fun moving through each of these. Even stacking today’s tasks together, you’re only looking at around 35 minutes total, and in that time you can touch a genuinely meaningful number of spots throughout your house. That’s really all this is meant to do: help you feel like things haven’t completely slid while your attention is elsewhere on Christmas itself.
Your practical, actionable step
Set a five-minute timer for washing dishes today, and if you’ve got more time, stack a few more five-minute rounds from the list above.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
