Day 10 of our 12 Days of Chaos series is “10 Clutter a-Clearing,” and the trick today is making the clutter you’ve stopped seeing visible again.
Walk into one of the more visible rooms in your house, stand in a spot, and snap a photo on your phone. Then look at it with the same critical eye you’d use scrolling social media. If you were about to post this photo, what would you want to change about it first? What’s making you less likely, or less proud, to share it?
That photo turns invisible clutter, the stuff you’ve walked past so many times your brain has stopped registering it, back into something visible you can actually act on.
Set a five-minute timer and go after exactly what showed up in that photo. Most of this invisible clutter exists because something got set down outside its real home in a moment when you didn’t have time to deal with it properly. What’s almost funny is how often, once the timer starts, these things turn out to have homes just a few feet away. The toilet paper that never made it into the bathroom cabinet. The shoes piled up ten feet from where they actually belong. Things dropped downstairs because nobody felt like carrying them back up. Whatever got them there, use the five minutes to get them to their actual home. If something doesn’t have an established home yet but you know roughly where it should eventually live, at least move it in that general direction.
When the timer goes off, stand in the same spot and take the photo again. Swipe between the before and after and notice the difference. If you’re motivated, set a second five-minute timer and keep going until the gap between your original photo and the new one feels genuinely satisfying.
Take a photo of one visible room right now, look at it the way you’d look at someone else’s photo online, and set a five-minute timer to clear exactly what bothers you in it. Then take the photo again and see the difference.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
