Welcome back to the 12 Days of Chaos series. Day 11 is what I’m calling “11 Clothes a-Folding,” and it doubles as a fun little race against your dryer.
Walk to your laundry room and check the status. If you’re anything like me, there’s a load that’s been sitting in the dryer for who knows how long. Reset it for a 20-minute refluff so it’s actually foldable, hit start, and then race the clock through your house.
Head to your bedroom first and set a five-minute timer just to make the bed, giving yourself a surface to dump and fold clothes on later. If time’s left on that timer, dust and straighten surfaces in the bedroom or move out to common areas guests might see.
When that timer buzzes, restart immediately without overthinking it, and move to the kitchen for a five-minute tidy: empty and reload the dishwasher, fill the sink with soapy water, and get any dirty dishes soaking. When that one goes off, reset again and wipe down counters, then straighten the living room if time allows, a quick toy tidy or fluffing the couch pillows.
One more five-minute timer, if the dryer’s still running, for a quick vacuum or wipe-down of the powder room, whichever feels more urgent. By the time the dryer buzzer sounds, you’ve already touched four different spaces in your home.
Set the timer once more and fold as much of that laundry basket as you can in five minutes. You’ll be surprised how far you get, our brains tend to assume it’s not possible, but five focused minutes covers more than you’d expect. Then set it one final time to actually put those folded clothes away, at least getting them into the rooms where they belong, and take a last glance around for anything small that would make the whole reset feel complete.
Thirty minutes from now, you’ll have a genuinely reset house, one that looks kept up enough that nobody coming or going during the chaos of the season is going to question a thing. That’s really the goal. I always push living your actual life far above trying to look a certain way. A joy-loving home is about the joy, not the stuff, and a house that looks reasonably lived-in during the busiest season of the year is exactly as it should be.
Set your dryer for a 20-minute refluff right now, and race through four five-minute timers in four different spaces before it buzzes. Then fold and put away what you can in one more five-minute round.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
