We’ve reached the last day of our 12 Days of Chaos series, the playful spin on the 12 Days of Christmas we’ve been using all month to keep some handle on the house during the busiest stretch of the year. Today’s theme, to the tune of the song, is 12 items donated. And since this lands almost exactly a week before Christmas, I also want to talk about managing the procrastination panic that tends to bubble up right about now.
Grab one of the Amazon boxes that’s no doubt landed on your porch at some point this month, and fill it with the first 12 things you spot that are genuinely easy decisions. Don’t overthink it and don’t stress over any of them. Old Christmas decorations you haven’t put up in four years but keep shoving back into storage anyway belong in this box right now. Do a quick sweep of your kids’ toys for the ones that never get touched, and slip them into the box quickly, before your kids notice and suddenly decide it’s their most treasured possession. If you already know certain items are being replaced by something arriving this Christmas, whether it no longer fits, is worn out, or you just don’t like it anymore, drop those in too, so the old version is out the door before the new one comes in.
If your five-minute timer runs out but there’s still a little room left in the box, grab a couple more things on your way out and take the whole box straight to your car. Weigh it down if you need to, and drop it at the nearest donation center on your way to whatever Christmas errand comes next. There’s something genuinely satisfying about knowing some things left before the new things arrived.
If you’ve got extra time and want to spend five minutes in each category we’ve covered this series, here’s the full lineup: 12 items donated, 11 clothes a-folding, 10 clutter a-clearing, 9 toys a-tidying, 8 dishes a-washing, 7 things a-dusting, 6 floors a-sweeping, 5-minute tidy, 4 cleared surfaces, 3 scrubbed bathrooms, 2 fluffy pillows, and a “sew” to set priorities. Working through all of it means you can take a real breath knowing that, one week out from Christmas, your house is still under some semblance of control. That was the entire goal of this series: keeping a handle on one piece of the house so it doesn’t add stress to an already stressful season.
If you’re looking at your Christmas list and feeling the familiar last-minute dread, take a breath first. You genuinely thrive under urgency and last-minute pressure. You are capable of pulling off what actually needs to happen. But the real key is being willing to let go of what was only ever on the list because it felt like it belonged there, not because you or your family actually cares about it.
Give yourself grace here. This particular year had only 27 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the shortest possible gap, five days shorter than it can be at its longest. That’s not an excuse, it’s a legitimate reason to let some things go. Skipping the garland on the banister doesn’t ruin anyone’s Christmas. Skipping the outdoor lights doesn’t either, drive around and enjoy everyone else’s instead.
Go through whatever’s still pending and ask, honestly, whether each item will actually bring your family peace or joy. If it brings you anything else, dread, obligation, resentment, let it go. Deciding something no longer needs to be on the list is itself tackling it. Scratch off the garland. Scratch off the lights. Scratch off the acquaintance’s party you only felt obligated to attend. They won’t miss you, I promise.
Fill a box with 12 easy donation decisions today. Then look at whatever’s left on your Christmas list and cross off anything that isn’t bringing your family real peace or joy.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
