Summer brain drain is a real thing. As a former fourth-grade teacher, I’d start each September with kids who felt like babies again, even though they’d left me as near-fifth-graders the previous June. Every fall meant stepping back to rebuild the fundamentals before any real progress could happen, because pushing ahead without that foundation just meant frustration for everyone.
Your home needs the same reset. If you’re a stay-at-home parent about to gain some hours back now that kids are in school, it’s tempting to dive straight into the big, exciting project you’ve been dreaming about all summer. Resist that urge for a beat. Get the basics solid first, and everything after goes more smoothly.
Here are the three spots worth setting up before anything else.
Whatever you call it — mudroom, entryway, landing pad — this is the spot where lunchboxes, backpacks, shoes, sports equipment, instruments, and library books all have an obvious home, alongside your own keys, purse, and shoes. The only goals here are easy drop and easy grab. Don’t overthink the aesthetics; nobody needs this space to be pretty, just functional under pressure.
The real payoff shows up on the day you’re deep in some hyper-focused project and suddenly realize you’re supposed to be in the car line five minutes ago. With a real launch pad in place, you can grab everything you need and be out the door — instead of losing ten frantic minutes hunting for your keys, your purse, or whatever you were supposed to bring along. A basket by the door, or one in the car, for anything that regularly needs to leave or enter the house works well here too.
Pick one location for your cleaning supplies and actually commit to it being the one place they live. This matters more than it sounds like it should, because it’s exactly the kind of thing that derails a hyper-focus project. You get swept up wiping down every bookshelf with Murphy’s oil soap, get everything pulled off the shelves, and then can’t remember if the cleaner is under the sink, in the bathroom, in the laundry room, or in the basement. Knowing the one spot, always, keeps a burst of motivation from stalling out on a supply hunt.
While you’re relearning the whole pickup-drop-off-practice-snack-second-supper rhythm of a new school year, give yourself full permission for the most basic meals possible. This isn’t the season for elaborate cooking — it’s the season for keeping everyone fed while you figure out the new schedule.
If you’ve got a spare Sunday evening, browning a few pounds of ground beef and splitting it across tacos one night, spaghetti the next, and leftovers of each after that is a completely legitimate plan for these first few weeks. Nobody’s going to bed hungry, and that’s really the entire bar you need to clear right now.
Pick one of these three spaces today and get it functional: sort the entryway, consolidate your cleaning supplies into one spot, or stock a few easy, repeatable meals. Handle the other two over the following days, before tackling anything bigger.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
