Here’s a quick challenge for when you know you should be tidying something, but you can’t get past the mental argument over which space actually deserves your attention first. Take the decision away entirely, and let a die make it for you.
Grab paper or your phone’s notes app and number one through six. Write down six locations in your home that seem to need tidying over and over, no matter how often you handle them. Mine tend to be bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, laundry, entry, and family room, but yours can be whatever six spots actually cycle through needing attention in your own house.
Dig up an actual die from a game closet, or just ask a smart speaker to give you a random number between one and six. Whatever number comes up, that’s your space. Set a 15-minute timer and spend the whole time tidying it.
You’re not aiming for a finished, perfect space. You’re just improving it by 15 minutes’ worth of effort. That’s the entire goal.
If you truly can’t stomach walking into whatever space got rolled, you get exactly one reroll. Not endless rerolling until you land on the number you secretly wanted. One do-over, then you commit to whatever comes up.
Two things are happening here. First, it removes the paralysis that comes from being able to argue, convincingly, why any one of your six spots deserves priority over the others. Instead of looping on that decision, the die makes the call and your job is just to move your feet in that direction.
Second, there’s a small gamification effect — the act of rolling, or asking for a random number, adds a tiny dopamine spark that helps push you past the initial resistance to getting started. That’s really the whole battle: overcoming the inertia of not moving yet.
Once the 15 minutes are up, you have full permission to stop there. But if you’re on a roll (pun intended) and don’t want to lose the momentum, reset the timer and keep pushing as long as it’s working for you. If instead you’ve got somewhere else you’d rather direct your energy, commit to the 15 minutes here first, then move on — the motion from this exercise tends to carry into whatever comes next.
This same approach works for any list where the options feel equally important and equally paralyzing: doctor’s appointments to schedule, returns to make, errands to knock out. Number them, roll for one, and go. You can also run the cleaning version six days in a row, promising yourself you won’t repeat a space until all six have had their turn.
List your six recurring spaces right now, roll (or ask your speaker) for a number, and set a 15-minute timer for whatever comes up.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
