This one came out of a hard stretch, some rocky weeks with my mom’s health, emergency room trips, drives to stay with her, a vacation squeezed in the middle of it all. Through it, she kept apologizing for being a burden, replaying every “if only I had done this sooner,” mourning three lost weeks she couldn’t get back. I heard someone once say that her worry about being a burden had become the actual burden, it had nothing to do with her anymore, the worry itself was the weight. That idea stuck with me, because I think a lot of us carry that same unproductive weight around our homes and our own unfinished plans.
Fear of doing it wrong, fear of not being able to repeat a good result, fear of embarrassment, fear of being a bother, fear that it’s simply too late now, these are all things we layer on top of the time blindness and executive functioning struggles we’re already dealing with. None of that worry moves anything forward. It’s just weight added to brains that are already working hard enough.
I had a birthday recently and realized with a jolt that we’re deep into summer already, three kids heading back to three different schools on three different dates, all within weeks of each other, plus a family reunion trip in the middle of it. I could look at that and declare it another wasted summer where I had big hopes and did none of it. Or I can just say: today is today, let’s see what’s possible with what’s left.
Open your calendar and write down only the hard, unmovable dates, school start dates, remaining camps, tournaments, well visits, dentist appointments, whatever can’t shift. Nothing fancy, no special planner needed, just the non-negotiables.
Grab a sticky note or notepad and write down your pending list, everything that genuinely needs to happen before school starts, school supply lists, new shoes, backpack and lunchbox checks, clothes that no longer fit after a growth spurt. Then add in everything you’d hoped to get to, the homework zone overhaul, the mudroom cleanout, the bedroom reorganize, the donation purge, even a purely fun wish like one more firefly-catching night. The pending list isn’t a to-do list you’re failing at. Every item on it that you consciously decide not to tackle right now has still been acted on, you made a decision about it, which is different from ignoring it or feeling guilty about it.
This is where everything you actually complete goes, even things that were never written on the pending list in the first place. Seeing that list grow is the visual proof of how much you’re actually accomplishing once you decide it’s not too late.
When you catch yourself starting the “if only” spiral, stop, walk over to the pending list, and do something on it, even something small or seemingly silly. The point isn’t a perfectly organized system with categories and color coding. It’s simply having somewhere to look when your brain wants to replay regret instead of taking action.
Start your own pending list and tackled list today. Write down the hard dates first, then everything you genuinely need to get done plus everything you’d hoped to get done, no matter how small or ambitious. Then pick just one thing off it and move it to your tackled list before the day ends.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
