This is a bit of a reflective bonus episode looking back on a full year of this podcast, but I think the lessons underneath it apply directly to one of our biggest obstacles in getting our homes together, the mental hurdle, not the physical one.
Funny enough, while writing notes about how we turn small stumbling blocks into massive obstacles, I recorded this entire episode twice without realizing my microphone and headphones weren’t actually plugged in after reconfiguring my computer for a Zoom call. Third time’s the charm.
Looking back a year, I was brand new at every part of this. I don’t think I’ve relistened to my earliest episodes, and I probably never will, but I trust there’s been real growth even if I can’t always feel it happening day to day. It’s a familiar problem, we rarely notice our own progress in real time. If I’d had a year-ago snapshot of my house the way I have of this podcast’s episode count and download numbers, I imagine it would be just as rewarding to look back on. We don’t usually get that kind of concrete before-and-after for our homes, which is part of why growth there can feel invisible even when it’s genuinely happening.
If you’d told me a year ago I’d cross 50 episodes, I would have been thrilled and skeptical. I’m well over 100 now. If you’d told me I’d exceed 60,000 downloads, I honestly might have been too scared to start at all. The whole reason I pushed myself to begin was a strong belief that I wasn’t alone in feeling like every other mom had it together while I didn’t. If this podcast helped even one mom feel less like a failure, that would have been enough.
Longer gaps between episodes make it genuinely harder to hit record again, even though the moment I actually start, I remember it’s fine. That gap between dread and action is real, and pretending it isn’t doesn’t make it easier to push through.
I’ve spent a year telling all of you that deadlines and accountability matter, and I finally had to apply that to myself. I set a real public deadline for relaunching my website and podcast home, and I hired help, someone who now gives me specific assignments with real due dates to get me across the finish line. Having someone else drag you toward completion, someone who can see your blind spots and keep pushing when your own motivation flags, makes an enormous difference. That’s exactly what I want to be for people navigating their own homes.
I didn’t title this episode “100,” because that number felt too significant, too daunting to just let be ordinary. So I made it a bonus episode instead, sidestepping the pressure entirely, and it still counted as forward motion. Sometimes a loophole, reframing a milestone so it doesn’t paralyze you, is a legitimate way to keep going rather than a way of avoiding the real work.
If a specific milestone or number is quietly paralyzing you on a project, whether it’s finishing a room, a goal, or anything you’ve been avoiding because it feels like it needs to be “special,” give yourself permission to sidestep the pressure with a loophole of your own, a smaller version, a different label, whatever keeps you moving forward instead of frozen in place.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
