Christmas cards might feel a little old-fashioned in an era of constant digital updates, but there’s still something genuinely special about them. The original purpose was simple: once a year, reach out to people you might not otherwise stay in regular touch with, and let them know they’re still thought of. That purpose hasn’t gone away just because the technology around it has changed.
Not everyone stays connected through social media, and a real card in the mailbox, even without a handwritten note inside, still carries weight. It’s proof that someone took the time to think of you, address an envelope, and send it your way. If sending cards is something you enjoy, it’s worth continuing, it still spreads real joy on both ends.
If you love receiving cards but know sending them realistically isn’t going to happen, there’s a simple way to stay on people’s radar. A quick text saying you got their card and appreciated it takes almost no effort, and keeps you from quietly getting trimmed off next year’s list, since senders who never hear back eventually stop sending.
Here’s a small habit worth trying during any downtime on the couch: instead of mindless scrolling, open your text messages and scroll all the way to the bottom, where the oldest, least active threads live. Glance at what the last exchange was about, and if it’s someone worth reconnecting with, send a quick “thinking of you” or holiday greeting, then swipe and delete the thread. Work up from there, one at a time. Even five or ten minutes of this clears out real phone storage and, more importantly, opens the door to reconnecting with people who’ve drifted out of regular contact.
Pick one low-effort way to reconnect this season, whether that’s a quick reply to someone’s card, or five minutes spent scrolling to the bottom of your texts and sending a short greeting to someone you haven’t heard from in a while. Small gestures like these matter more than they take to send.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
