Three excuses come up again and again when it comes to getting a home organized: not enough time, not enough space, and not enough money. All three feel real in the moment, but none of them are actually the true barrier.
Everyone genuinely does have different amounts of usable time depending on their circumstances, that’s real and worth acknowledging. But time itself usually isn’t the actual obstacle. Consider how much unstructured time suddenly appeared for many people in 2020, and how little of it translated into lasting organization for most, despite an initial burst of energy. Extra time alone doesn’t automatically produce results. The real shift comes from motivation and a plan, not simply from finding more hours in the day.
Size has surprisingly little to do with how organized a space actually is. Plenty of tiny homes stay immaculately organized, while plenty of sprawling homes with room to spare stay just as cluttered as a much smaller space. This comes down to inventory, not square footage. A home that isn’t organized at a thousand square feet generally won’t magically become organized at two thousand or ten thousand square feet either. The house simply grows to hold however much stuff is kept in it, whatever the size.
Pretty storage solutions, professional help, closet systems, all of those genuinely cost money. But the single biggest lever for improving how a home feels, decluttering, is completely free. Reducing how much is actually being stored and managed makes a bigger difference than any amount of money spent on containers or renovations. And for anyone without an easy way to haul donations away, many charities will pick items up directly from a front porch, removing even that small logistical barrier.
Time, space, and money all feel like legitimate obstacles, but none of them are the actual thing standing between where a home is now and where it could be. The real barrier, and the real solution, comes down to mindset and motivation, not resources.
Pick one excuse you’ve been leaning on, time, space, or money, and test whether it’s really true. Spend fifteen minutes decluttering one small area without spending a dime, and notice how much of the perceived barrier was really about mindset rather than resources.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
