For a certain kind of brain, starting any special project means the rest of the house falls apart around it. There’s no in-between, either full immersion in the project or full attention on the house, never both at once. During the holidays, when kids are home constantly, schedules shift, and there’s a steady stream of one-time projects like baking and programs and get-togethers, that trade-off gets even more pronounced. Here’s a quick survival method for the season: the SPIT clean.
Before the method itself, a blanket permission slip: nothing catastrophic happens if the house looks like it blew up while you’re deep in a fun seasonal project. Life is too short to treat house tidiness as a non-negotiable constant. Enjoy the projects fully, and when they’re done, take a breath and tackle the house then. This is a band-aid, not a deep clean, and band-aids are genuinely useful.
Speed through your Prioritized Impactful Tasks. The idea borrows from the old “spit clean,” a quick wipe-down that makes things look better without being properly clean, good enough to walk in the door and not embarrass anyone.
Focus on exactly three areas: the kitchen, since it’s the heart of most homes, the entry or main living space where people actually gather, and the bathroom guests will use. Everything else, including the rest of the bathrooms, gets a pass for now.
Pick one favorite upbeat song, or a short rotation of a few, and give yourself the length of that song in each space, three to five minutes max. In the kitchen, run a sink of soapy water, drop in anything dirty, and wipe the counters, that’s the visual win right there. If there’s time left, do a quick pass with a broom. In the entry or living space, grab a basket or bag and sweep through gathering anything that doesn’t belong there, stashing it in a designated catch-all spot to sort later. In the guest bathroom, a fast wipe-down is enough.
Done once a day, or even twice, morning and evening, this adds up to real, visible impact over the stretch of days leading into the new year, without eating into time meant for the fun stuff.
Pick one energizing song, then give yourself just its length in each of three spaces, kitchen, main living area, and guest bathroom, tackling only the highest-impact tasks in each. Do this daily through the busy season, and save deeper cleaning for whenever the new year brings a natural reset.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
