This is a little jolt of joy, something a bit different from my usual planning and organizing tips, more of a mindset shift that hit me this morning.
I’ve always believed my real goal with this podcast was helping scattered moms feel better about how their brains work, giving tips and mindset shifts that let us work with our brains instead of against them, so we could feel some real peace in our homes. That’s all still true. But this morning I realized something underneath it.
I hear from so many of you: I wasn’t productive today, I didn’t get anything done, I felt busy and exhausted but my house shows no sign I did any work at all. That frustrates and saddens me, because I think you’re internalizing a message from traditional planners and productivity experts who insist your life should be built around time blocks, task completions, and consistent routines. When your brain doesn’t work that way, and it interrupts those plans constantly, you feel like a failure on top of already feeling exhausted.
So let’s actually look at what’s doing the interrupting.
It’s life. It’s your kids. It’s your spouse. It’s the good friend who calls out of nowhere because she’s struggling and needs you to listen. It’s a baby cutting a new tooth who won’t nap the way the schedule assumed she would. It’s a kid getting off the bus, bursting with stories they need to tell you right now, while you’re half-listening and redirecting them to the next task on the list. And in that moment, you’re missing the actual life happening in front of you.
Why are we building our systems and plans around tasks and objects, things that will still be sitting there tomorrow, or that get messy again the moment they’re clean, while treating the genuinely finite parts of life, our kids being little, nurturing a marriage, being present for the people who need us, as the interruption to get past? Why aren’t we celebrating those moments as the actual point, and building our lives around them, squeezing the tasks into whatever margins are left over instead of the other way around?
I want to flip that completely. I want us to go to bed at night, look at the dirty dishes and the laundry piles, and instead of thinking I failed again, I can’t keep up with anything, actually smile and recognize that you chose wisely today. You chose to prioritize your kids, your friends, your family. You chose what actually mattered over the stuff. That’s worth everything.
Two hundred episodes into this podcast, thank you for letting me share that message. If you know someone else who’s struggling with how they see their home, or feeling like they can’t get it together, share this with them. Tell them: you’re prioritizing life, and that’s worthwhile.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
