When I talk to listeners about their biggest stumbling block to getting their homes in order, one thing comes up over and over: just getting themselves to take action. Not knowing where to start. Freezing before they even begin.
If this is the only thing you take from anything I ever say, let it be this: give up the endless pursuit of the perfect routine or cleaning strategy. Quit the search, and quit the defeat you feel every time you fail to stick to a system that was never built for you in the first place.
A huge chunk of the cleaning and organizing industry is type-A people teaching other type-A people methods designed for type-A brains. If you’re a fish brain (not a monkey brain), your brain isn’t built for routine or consistency — it’s built to seek novelty and urgency. That’s not a flaw to fix. It’s just how you’re wired.
Think about how many times you’ve started to tackle your home and frozen instead — because you were worried you’d start on the wrong thing, do it the wrong way, or hadn’t yet found the exact right organizing tool, cleaner, Pinterest photo, or Instagram account that would tell you the precise steps to a house that looks just like yours. That search for the “right way first” is the perfectionism that’s actually stalling you out. The problem was never that you hadn’t found the right system. There isn’t one. You have full permission — mine, if you need it — to do this any way you want. Doing anything beats doing nothing.
Forget progress toward a plan. All I want from you right now is motion — mindless, undirected motion. If you’re not driving or on a walk, stand up right now and move toward whatever you gravitate to. Here are some places to land:
None of these require a decision about what “should” happen next — that’s the point. Any bit of motion gets your fish brain swimming until a current pulls you in, and suddenly you’re just doing things. Doing things beats doing nothing.
Some days you’ll stand up, try, and just turn in circles — stuck in a whirlpool. That’s fine. Try again in an hour, or in 15 minutes. Set an alarm on your phone and try again when it goes off.
If it helps to have noise, put on a favorite song, an audiobook, or a podcast (hello) and get moving. If you’ve got littles underfoot and can’t put anything in your ears, sit on the floor with your kid and do something reachable and mindless from there — sorting toys into a bucket, dusting the corner near you, vacuuming the spots you can reach. Any motion counts.
Stand up. Walk toward the first mindless task that appeals to you. Don’t look for the right one — just move. There’s no secret system you’ve missed. Quit seeking the perfect routine, and start moving instead.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
