Summer isn’t built for routines, and honestly, that’s fine. Camp hours shift week to week, bedtimes slide, vacations start and end, kids are underfoot constantly, and any “keep to a schedule” plan you made back in May has probably already fallen apart. That’s not a failure — that’s just what summer is.
But every now and then, you still want that little hit of I got something done today. You don’t need a full routine for that. You need two simple systems that flex with the chaos instead of fighting it.
Here’s the move: open the Notes app on your phone right now — while you’re on the pool deck, at the park, wherever — and start a new note titled One and Dones.
A one-and-done is any task with a fast, contained start and finish. Not a project, not an overhaul — something you could knock out in five minutes flat the second you had a window to do it. Think:
Use the checklist feature in your Notes app — the one with the little bubble next to each line. When you check something off, it slides down and everything else shifts up. That’s a built-in version of what’s sometimes called a non-linear pending list: a list you’re never required to work through in order. If you get stuck or bored on item one, you’re not stuck — just skip to whichever item actually appeals to you in that moment and knock it out instead. No guilt, no order, just forward motion whenever a pocket of time opens up.
The goal isn’t to overhaul anything (that’s a different kind of project for a different day). It’s just to capture every small, nagging, five-minute task rattling around in your head so that the next time you’re waiting in the pickup line or sitting on a bench, you have somewhere to point that spare ten minutes.
For the house itself, drop any idea of a weekly or daily cleaning routine for the summer. Shift instead to ad hoc cleaning — literally, cleaning done for a specific, immediate purpose, not planned in advance and not meant to stick around as a long-term system.
What that looks like in practice:
Ad hoc cleaning only responds to what’s actually happening right now. It’s not “we always deep-clean the bathroom before guests” as a standing rule — it’s “guests are coming in an hour, so here’s what actually needs doing.” That’s it.
Both halves of this system are built around the same idea: small, complete actions that give you an immediate sense of “done.” Checking something off your one-and-dones list is a quick win. Getting the house ready for exactly what today requires — and nothing more — is another one. Both give you that little boost of accomplishment without demanding the kind of sustained routine that summer was never going to allow anyway.
A daily or weekly clean-the-whole-house routine isn’t going to get appreciated in July — everyone’s too busy, too tired, and too in-and-out for it to register. So don’t overthink it, and don’t fuss over what you’re not getting to. Close a loop when you can. Clean for the moment you’re actually in. That’s the whole system.
Have a lovely summer, and until next time, continue to choose joy.
