There’s a small but meaningful distinction worth making between anticipating something and expecting it. Anticipating a new habit, a new routine, or a new plan leaves room for flexibility if life shifts. Expecting it sets up a rigid promise that, when broken, can feel like outright failure.
Consistency gets preached constantly as the key to success, and for a lot of people, that’s genuinely true. But for anyone whose brain treats a broken streak as a reason to quit entirely, consistency becomes a dangerous word rather than a helpful one. It’s worth naming that discomfort honestly rather than pretending a perfectly unbroken routine is realistic or even necessary.
Above almost everything else, flexibility to prioritize family or health when either genuinely needs attention matters more than sticking rigidly to any plan. That doesn’t mean abandoning structure altogether, it means holding it loosely enough that real life can move through it without triggering guilt or a sense of failure every time something shifts.
Putting something out into the world, whether that’s a project, a goal, or a public commitment, creates a form of accountability that’s genuinely useful, even without demanding perfection. It’s not about promising flawless follow-through, it’s about creating enough outside pressure to keep showing up, imperfectly, again and again.
Pick one area where you’ve been holding yourself to strict consistency and quietly dreading the moment it breaks. Reframe your expectation from “I have to do this every single time” to “I anticipate doing this, and I’ll pick back up if I don’t.” Notice how much lighter that framing feels.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
