A small but genuinely useful trick for getting through the boring, mindless chores that ADHD brains tend to avoid or drift away from mid-task: pair them with something enjoyable, and restrict that enjoyable thing to only happen during the chore.
Folding laundry and washing dishes are both classic drudgery tasks, repetitive enough to lose focus on, but not demanding enough to require full attention. That combination makes them perfect candidates for pairing with a favorite video or podcast. A tablet propped safely nearby while dishes get washed, an episode playing while sitting in the middle of a pile of laundry to fold, both turn an otherwise tedious task into something to look forward to. The same logic works for walking dogs or cleaning while listening to a favorite podcast.
The trick only functions if the enjoyable thing is limited specifically to chore time. If a favorite show or podcast is available any time regardless of what’s happening, there’s no added pull to actually get the chore done. Setting a personal rule, that particular video only plays while folding, that podcast only plays while cleaning, keeps the reward tied directly to the task.
For decluttering and organizing content that fits an ADHD brain especially well: The Minimal Mom breaks things down simply, without overcomplicating the process with too many steps. Cas the Clutterbug offers a genuinely useful framework for identifying your own organizing style through her quiz-based system, and is openly ADHD herself, which shows in how she approaches the topic. Dana K. White’s books and content focus on decluttering from the perspective of someone who never loved the process but needed a sustainable system for her own family anyway. And for understanding the ADHD brain itself, not specifically organizing, Jessica McCabe’s How to ADHD channel is exceptional, well researched and genuinely helpful for understanding yourself or an ADHD loved one better, including a couple of especially good videos specifically on motivation.
Pick one chore you consistently avoid or drift away from, and pair it with one specific show, podcast, or video series. Make a personal rule that you only get to enjoy that content while doing the chore, nowhere else, and see how much easier it becomes to actually start.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
