Halfway through the busy pre-holiday stretch is a good time to take a breath and focus on the piece that usually causes the most stress: gift buying, and the nagging worry of overbuying for one person while forgetting someone else entirely. A single, perfectly efficient marathon errand day where everything gets checked off at once isn’t realistic for most of us, and that’s fine. The goal is simply doing it a little better than before, not doing it perfectly.
Grab empty bins, wherever decorations just got pulled out of works well, and label one per person with a sticky note. As gifts come in, drop them straight into the right bin. This creates an immediate visual check: if one bin has four gifts and another has none, that’s an instant signal something’s off, no need for a spreadsheet to notice it. If something’s been ordered but hasn’t arrived yet, a quick sticky note on the bin, “ordered three books,” keeps you from thinking a gift was forgotten when it’s really just in transit.
Rigid pre-planning can work against a brain that thrives on noticing things in the moment. Heading out with a general sense of direction, rather than a locked-in list and route, leaves room to stumble onto the unexpected gift that turns out to be exactly right, the pop-up shop you almost didn’t walk into, the item you didn’t know you were looking for until it was in front of you. That kind of spontaneous, personality-driven shopping often produces better gifts than a rigid plan ever could.
Before gifts get buried in their hiding spot, take a few seconds to mark off what was purchased for whom. A running list, even a quick note or updated photo on your phone, keeps the picture current for the next errand run, rather than trying to reconstruct it from memory or a pile of receipts later.
Set up a labeled bin or space for each person on your list today, before the next round of shopping. Give yourself permission to shop somewhat spontaneously rather than rigidly, and build in the habit of updating your list the moment you walk back through the door.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
