You’ve probably tried the Miracle Morning, or some modified version of it, waking up earlier, doing all the “right” steps, reading about it for the hundredth time, convinced it’s supposed to work better than it does. Here are five steps toward something actually realistic.
You might insist you don’t have a morning routine at all, that no two days look the same, that you scramble out the door and collapse afterward with zero motivation left. Step back and look at your morning the way an outside observer would instead of living it in the weeds. Is there anything you do with total consistency? Brush your teeth before leaving? Throw on real clothes in case you’re seen at the bus stop? Grab coffee on your way out? For me, it’s coffee, without fail. Find your one completely consistent thing, and know that your “morning routine” doesn’t have to start before your kids wake up. It can start whenever your actual day begins for you, even after everyone else is gone.
Once you’ve identified your one unshakable habit, anchor a new habit onto it, using the existing behavior as the trigger to remember the new one. I’ve recently started pairing a Magic Mind shot with my morning coffee, a two-ounce matcha shot with natural ingredients like lion’s mane, turmeric, and ashwagandha, meant to support steadier focus without needing medication, which I’ve personally chosen not to pursue for my own ADHD. I tested it for three days, took a break to rule out placebo effect, then came back to it consistently for over a week, and I do notice a real difference in my productivity. Because I grab it from the fridge the same moment I reach for my coffee creamer, remembering it has become effortless rather than something I have to consciously force. The lesson generalizes beyond this particular product: whatever you’re trying to pair with your one steady anchor habit, make it as physically seamless and low-friction as possible.
If you declare you’ll start a seven-step routine every single morning at exactly 6:30, you’ll manage it right up until life throws a wrench in it, and then the all-or-nothing brain tends to abandon the whole thing. Instead, let your “morning routine” click in whenever your morning actually starts, which can shift on weekends, holidays, or sick days, and it doesn’t need to run seven days a week. You might decide it only applies on school days. Building in that flexibility from the start removes the excuse to quit entirely the first time it doesn’t go perfectly.
Give a new pairing real time to settle in before layering on something else. I started my coffee-and-Magic-Mind pairing when the house quieted down as my daughter headed off to school, a natural seasonal shift that felt like a good moment to try something new. About a month in, once it felt automatic, I added a second pairing: brushing my teeth now triggers starting a load of laundry, since I’m wandering the house anyway mid-brush. I’ll let that one settle for a while before adding a third, likely pairing making the bed with getting dressed. Piling on an entire eleven-step plan from day one is exactly the kind of overload that leads to abandoning it altogether.
Consider calling this a morning ritual rather than a routine, since ritual implies something that flexes with vacations, sickness, or a rough week, rather than a rigid system waiting to be broken. Our brains crave some variation and novelty, and fighting that need with an unbending schedule usually backfires. The constants stay constant, brushing your teeth, getting dressed, that non-negotiable cup of coffee, and everything else gets to flex around them.
Identify the one thing you already do without fail every morning, and pick a single small new habit to pair with it this week, nothing more. Let it become automatic before you even think about adding a second pairing.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
