Day six of our 12 Days of Chaos series, five-minute tasks stacked on top of each other, playing off the 12 Days of Christmas song, to keep the house from sliding too far during the holiday rush.
Set a five-minute timer and sweep, vacuum, or do a quick broom pass, whatever “sweeping” means for your space. If you’ve got little ones around, they’re already closer to the floor than you are. Hand them a small broom and dustpan and let them join in for the five minutes. This isn’t about doing it perfectly, it’s about proving to yourself that five minutes genuinely makes things better, no all-or-nothing task required.
Day five was a five-minute tidy anywhere: don’t overthink it, just pick whatever your eyes land on first that bugs you, and give it five minutes.
Day four was four cleared surfaces. In my own kitchen, I break the counters into small chunks: left of the sink, right of the sink, left of the stove, right of the stove, four separate little zones. Fill the sink with sudsy water, sweep through and drop dirty dishes in to soak, wipe down those four spots, and the whole kitchen suddenly looks dramatically better. If someone drops by unannounced during the holidays, it just looks like you’re mid-wash, even if those dishes sit soaking all day before actually making it into the dishwasher that night. No perfection required here either.
Day three moves to a five-minute bathroom pass, ideally the powder room guests are most likely to use, or whichever bathroom matters most if company’s coming.
Day two, “two fluffy pillows,” can be making a bed or straightening a couch, whatever fits.
Day one is what I call the “so” to set priorities: a double-check of your schedule. It’s easy to forget plans you’ve made over the holidays, whether it’s a written list, a digital calendar, or an alarm you forgot to set. Check daily to make sure you’re not missing something that actually brings you joy, because that’s the real point of all of this. A joy-loving home is about the people and the small, ordinary life moments, being present for them is what actually creates the joy, not any of the surrounding tidiness.
Set a five-minute timer and sweep or vacuum one space today. If you have extra time, stack in the previous days’ tasks, cleared counters, a quick bathroom pass, fluffed pillows, and a check of your schedule for anything you don’t want to miss.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
