12 Days of Chaos, Day 7: Dusting, and the Trick of Banking Your Timer Minutes
Day seven of our 12 Days of Chaos series, our five-minute-a-day play on the 12 Days of Christmas to keep some basics from falling apart during the busiest season of the year.
Today’s task: 7 Dusted Surfaces
Grab a dust rag and set a five-minute timer. This isn’t about perfection, you’re not moving every single tchotchke to dust underneath it. Just whip through and hit some surfaces. If it prompts you to straighten a coffee table right before dusting it, that’s a bonus. If it reveals a spot you didn’t realize had piled up because dusting isn’t a regular habit for you, that’s useful information too.
The number seven is really just there for the fun of the song. It doesn’t matter if you actually dust seven surfaces or twenty, the goal is simply filling the five minutes.
The banking trick
Here’s a genuinely useful move: if you’d rather spend your time on a different task than dusting, count off your seven surfaces quickly, then bank whatever time is left on your timer and redirect it toward the task you actually want more time on. It’s a good way to keep momentum going while still honoring what your brain actually wants to focus on in that moment.
The full lineup so far
Seven dusted surfaces, six swept floors, a five-minute tidy, four cleaned surfaces, three cleaned bathrooms, two fluffy pillows, and a “so” to set priorities.
Your practical, actionable step
Set a five-minute timer and dust whatever’s in reach. If you find yourself wanting to redirect that time to something else, bank the leftover minutes and spend them there instead.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
