If you’ve been doing more doom scrolling than you’d like lately, feeling paralyzed by how much there is to do, this is a hack to jumpstart action, not a deep clean. Grab an empty bin, basket, or laundry hamper, plus a dust rag and some all-purpose spray, and let’s get moving.
Grab your phone and set both a 15-minute countdown timer and a stopwatch counting up, running at the same time. Fifteen minutes is the max you’ll spend on any single step, but the stopwatch tells you the real minimum it actually took — most of the time it’s less than you’d guess.
This is a four-step process, and every step starts with S, purely because alliteration makes it stick.
Hit start on both timers and walk into whichever room you’re tackling. Scoop anything out of place into your bin — but use your judgment. If couch pillows or a blanket are strewn around, it’s just as fast to put them back where they belong as it is to toss them in the bin. Dishes go straight to the kitchen, not into a box where they might break or dirty everything else. The goal is simple: anything not where it belongs gets moved, one way or another.
If your space isn’t too far gone, this might take five or ten minutes. If it’s genuinely out of control, that’s fine too — still use the full 15. And if you find yourself with leftover time, use it to really look at the space with fresh eyes: that stack of magazines that’s “always there” but has been quietly growing, that pile in the corner that doesn’t actually belong in that corner. You don’t have to make decisions yet — just scoop it in.
When you’re done, stop the timer and note how much time was left.
Restart both timers. Now actually clean — pick up the lamp and wipe under it, straighten and thin out anything left on surfaces, run the vacuum across the now-clear floor, dust the picture frames and baseboards, wipe fingerprints off the light switch plate. This is real cleaning time, not a cursory pass. If you finish before 15 minutes and the space genuinely feels done, stop there — that’s a win too.
This is the step that keeps you from ending up with what feels like a “doom basket” of stuff you just relocated. Grab the bin and start pulling items out one at a time. Find something with an obvious home — shoes go to the mudroom, for instance — and carry it there, checking the bin along the way for anything else headed in the same direction.
This step will likely eat your full 15 minutes, and that’s expected. The goal is for the bin to be empty by the end, even if things only make it partway to their final spot. For anything that’s genuinely “homeless” — items that never had an assigned place — ask yourself where you’d look first if you wanted that item back. Get it as close to that answer as you can. Sometimes this reveals things you’d forgotten you even owned, which might be your cue to donate rather than keep. If leftover time from step one or two is banked, use it here to actually finish.
When the bin is empty, walk back into the space and have a real conversation with your brain. Notice that it looks better, feels better, maybe even smells better. Remind yourself explicitly: none of the three steps took more than 15 minutes, and the whole transformation took 45 minutes at most, probably less.
Take a photo of the space looking this good and save it to an album — call it “4S’s.” The next time you’re tempted to doom scroll because “there’s nothing I can accomplish in 15 minutes,” open that album and look at proof otherwise. This is how we retrain an all-or-nothing brain to understand that short bursts genuinely add up.
Set an alarm for later today — even 30 minutes from now — labeled “4S time,” and run through Scoop, Scrub, Sort, and Savor in a different room. If you’re craving someone else’s picture-perfect house on your feed, remember the common thread in every one of those photos isn’t the design or the budget — it’s that the space is clean and uncluttered. That part, you can actually have, 15 minutes at a time.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
