I recently ran across a quote, a twist on something usually attributed to Mark Twain: good decisions come from experience, but experience comes from bad decisions. That’s just life. Don’t worry about the mistakes — go ahead and learn from them.
With Thanksgiving here, it felt worth sitting with that for a minute, because this weekend can go one of two ways for those of us who struggle with our homes. It can be a genuine day of gratitude, or it can quietly turn into a spiral of everything we could have, should have, meant to have done by now, standing at the edge of yet another year that didn’t go the way we pictured.
If that spiral sounds familiar, pump the brakes on it.
Take a second to notice what you actually have to be grateful for, even sitting in the middle of it. You have a home, whatever shape it’s currently in — messy or not, it’s yours to figure out. All that chaos you’re frustrated with is also proof you’re blessed to have things to dig out from in the first place, and every bit of it is a chance to learn something real about how you work and how to adjust.
Be grateful, too, for the beautiful, scattered mind that gets you into trouble and is also endlessly creative and full of good intentions. Be grateful for the family and pets who generate half the chaos you’re managing — what a strange, wonderful thing to have a life that’s this full.
If your only path in life was a smooth, perfectly paved road in perfect weather, you’d never understand why it was a blessing at all. We don’t appreciate anything without contrast. The highs only make sense because we understand the lows. Peace comes from working through trouble, not from avoiding it entirely.
So give yourself grace to actually be in your mess and your chaos this season, and remind yourself that you’re in the middle of a genuinely good stretch of learning and growing, even when it doesn’t feel like it in the moment.
Slow down this weekend and drink in the good moments, not the perfect ones. Let yourself enjoy the laughter that comes from something going sideways, the unplanned moment that has nothing to do with any carefully curated image on a screen. Real life is messy, unpredictable, and full of contrast, and it really shouldn’t be any other way.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and until next time, continue to choose joy.
