Any guesses how long the average human attention span is right now? Back in 2000, when this was first studied, it clocked in at twelve seconds. Today it’s down to 8.25 seconds. For context, scientists believe goldfish have roughly a nine-second attention span, which means the average person is now technically outpaced by a goldfish. Since I’ve spent this whole podcast calling us fish brains, maybe that puts us in decent company for once.
Ask a bull rider what eight seconds feels like, and they’ll tell you it’s an eternity, that’s the exact stretch of time they’re straining to survive. If I paused this podcast for eight full seconds of silence right now, it would feel unbearably long to sit through. Yet when we’re trying to focus on an email, a piece of research, or a conversation someone’s trying to have with us, our brain is ready to bail and switch gears roughly every eight seconds. That’s the uncomfortable part of this data.
We often hear advice like “just set a five-minute timer” and think, what’s five minutes really going to accomplish? But knowing what you now know about attention span, working on something for five straight minutes means you fought off your brain’s urge to shift gears roughly 36 separate times. That reframes five minutes from a throwaway suggestion into a genuine accomplishment, and often the on-ramp into a longer stretch of real focus, the kind where you look up two hours later only because you’re hungry.
When you feel the pull to grab your phone to numb out, distract from anxiety, or chase a quick hit of dopamine, try swapping it for something that expands your brain instead of shrinking it further, doodling, a puzzle, stepping outside for a walk. If staying present in a conversation is the challenge, try pairing it with something physical but mentally low-effort, folding laundry, walking, so your hands have somewhere to go while your attention actually stays on the person talking.
Movies and binge-worthy streaming shows top the list for holding attention the longest, largely thanks to built-in cliffhangers. But compared to blogs, Instagram, or TikTok, where people tend to barely scan before moving on, podcasts actually hold engagement noticeably better. If you’ve made it this far in an episode, genuinely give yourself credit, that’s real, sustained focus against some strong odds.
Try sitting in eight seconds of total silence sometime, no scrolling, no filler. It stretches longer than you’d expect, and noticing that stretch is its own small reminder of how quickly we’re wired to want to move on to the next thing.
The next time you’re tempted to dismiss a short timer as pointless, remind yourself what five uninterrupted minutes actually represents: dozens of resisted urges to quit. Set the timer anyway, and notice whether it becomes the doorway into something longer.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
