Remember the spit clean your mom used to do right before you walked into somewhere and needed to look remotely presentable? Lick her thumb, scrub at something on your face, brush off your clothes, smooth your hair down, and in you went. Not perfection — just good enough, fast.
That’s the spirit behind this challenge, except we’re doing it to a room instead of a kid.
SPIT is a choose-your-own-adventure acronym — whatever version motivates you most is the right one. It can stand for Survival Proof Immediate Tasks, Speed Prep Important Tasks, Stranger Proof Immediate Tasks, Spouse-Proof Important Tasks, or September Prep Important Tasks. Pick the framing that actually gets you off the couch: maybe it’s “a bus-stop kid might dash in here,” or “my spouse is convinced I do nothing all day and I’d like the evidence to say otherwise.” Perception versus reality, sure, but whatever gets you moving counts.
All you need is yourself and any way to set a timer. Set it for five minutes, and commit to repeating it up to three times, for 15 minutes total. If you hit three tasks and find yourself wanting to keep rolling for another two hours, go for it. But the actual goal is just three to five quick tasks, nothing more.
None of this is deep cleaning, and it’s not meant to become your actual cleaning standard. It’s fast hits only.
The real value isn’t a spotless house — it’s removing the guilt that quietly blocks bigger things. It’s hard to sit down and work on a project you’re genuinely excited about when part of your brain is stuck on “how can I focus on this while the house looks like that.” A quick SPIT clean satisfies that nagging voice enough to actually free you up for the thing you wanted to do with your time in the first place.
Set a five-minute timer right now. Pick one task from the list above, or your own version of it, and go. Repeat up to two more times if you’ve got the full 15 minutes.
Until next time, continue to choose joy.
